Berkshire is a giant conglomerate holding company, with hundreds of operating subsidiaries and huge stock investments.
Rather famously, it holds a massive cash hoard, recently amounting to $328 billion or a huge 28% of its assets. Equity investments total $295 billion or 25% of its assets. Only 1% of its assets are invested in fixed income. The remaining 46% consists of a vast array of hundreds of wholly owned operating subsidiaries. The largest operating segment is insurance, followed by the Burlington Northern Railway and its energy utilities. Other operating businesses include a wide variety of manufacturing, consumer service, and retailing businesses.
