The Southern Company (NYSE: SO)

Atlanta-based Southern was founded about a century ago. It supplies power to customers in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and north Florida. Its facilities range from fossil fuel plants (mainly coal and natural gas) to clean energy and nuclear. Its four Vogtie reactors, the last of which recently came on line, comprise the largest generator of clean energy in the US, and are expected to produce more than 30 million megawatt hours of electricity each year. The company’s goal is to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with a 50% reduction by 2030.
